Larry Gaynor, the President and CEO of TNG, founded his company all the way back in 1985. Almost 30 years ago, when his company was known simply as Nailco, he felt like he had his hand on the pulse of what manicurists needed, and he started doing what he could to meet those demands.
Though he only started with a scant three employees, he still pulled together a 16-page (black and white!) catalog, installed a toll-free 1-800 number for order placement, developed the Gold Card (now Nailco Rewards), and introduced a nail show—the first of its kind outside of California. Fast-forward three decades, and TNG is now a leader in distributing and manufacturing within the beauty and hospitality industries.
Having created TNG’s signature brands, which include black 15in1, For Pro, be PRO cosmetics, and Ginger Lily Farms, he’s ensured that TNG was 100% focused on customer success, with a mission of always meeting the needs of TNG’s customers. From our end, we’d definitely say, “Mission Accomplished.”
Gaynor and his company have won a boatload of awards. In 2001, Gaynor was named Ernst & Young’s Michigan “Entrepreneur of the Year.” TNG has earned the Detroit Free Press “Best Workplaces” award since 2008. Gaynor also brought Gallup principles to TNG, creating a strength-based organization. Oh, and top of being a complete world-beater, he writes a blog aptly called “The CEO’s Blog,” too. We’re wondering when he ever sleeps.
What we’re not wondering? Whether or not TNG is a valued partner. We asked Gaynor our favorite five questions, and as you’ll see right away, we’ve been pals for quite some time.
How did you discover Intrinsics' products?
Well before the products were called Intrinsics! In fact, it was back in the day when everything was Carolina Cotton and we needed nail wipes. Funny thing is that the original product we bought is still one of our best sellers.
Why did you decide to partner with Intrinsics?
Intrinsics has a full line of cotton products to satisfy just about every professional’s need. It is also nice that they have their own manufacturing plant for specialty items like cotton rope, cotton coils, and cotton rolls.
What is it about the partnership that works?
Quality products, timely shipments, and they are always trying to step out of the box by introducing new products. It's funny though that some of their new products are slow out of the gate because people get used to their existing products, and hate to try something new.
What Intrinsics products do your customers appreciate most?
They love the wipes best—both the nail and spa 2 x 2's and 4 x 4's.
Do you have a particular Intrinsics product that you consider your favorite?
Right now it is the cotton roll and that is a very funny story as to the reason why. But let's suffice it to say this is not one of Intrinsics’ favorite products, especially when they have run the line 24/7 to keep up with demand!
