Believe It Or Not, We’ve Been Around For Over A Century

Really, at Intrinsics we have a history within our history. If you know our story, you know we’ve seen some changes over the years. However, what you may not know is that our history actually dates all the way back to the start of the 20th century. Let’s take a look back through time to see how we got to where we are today.

The Beginnings of Barnhardt Manufacturing

Today Intrinsics is a subsidiary of Barnhardt Manufacturing Company, a company that first opened its doors in 1900. If you’re counting, that’s over 110 years ago. Barnhardt started as a supplier of layered cotton batting, horse drawn buggy seats, and filler for quilts and comforters. Obviously, this was way—and we mean way—back in the day.

In 1929, Barnhardt built its own original cotton bleachery just as the Great Depression started. You’d think that was bad timing. But 50 years later, in 1979, we built a brand-new bleachery, and then had to expand it again only a decade later. While Barnhardt also added a division called North Carolina Foam Industries beneath its umbrella in 1964, during the century the textile side of the company grew to meet the demands of an exploding purified cotton market.

The Introduction of Intrinsics

Then, in the 1980s, Barnhardt created a new division called Carolina Beauti-Products. This fledging company’s claim to fame was introducing 100% cotton coil to professional spas and salons. Needless to say, the professional spa and salon market is one that has expanded greatly over the last 30 years. We’ve done our best to keep pace.

That’s why in 1999 the company’s name shifted to Intrinsics as we decided to bring a wider array of products to the exploding salon and spa market. We began bringing together the finest materials—ranging from paper to polyester to latex, just to name a few—with our topnotch cotton to create the highest quality products on the market. Our goal was to become the single source for the single-use beauty products that spas and salons depend on.

At Intrinsics, we’re proud of our history. We also consider ourselves lucky to be backed by a family-owned cotton behemoth—especially considering that cotton plays an integral role in the bulk of our products.
